Two-Tone Shimmerstone

This project uses Shimmerstone, a soft metallic plaster from Modern Masters. You can substitute with your favorite brand of metallic plaster. They all work equally well with Modellos! This project is done over a base of Modern Masters Metallic Paint in a Teal color. When using metallic paints as basecoats, be sure to let them dry and cure for a minimum of 3+ days before apply Modellos as they seem to have a longer cure time that other latex paints.

Step 1Mix a dark tint strength of Shimmerstone by combining Dark Sapphire and Wet Concrete into the Tintable Base. Trowel on a thin layer through the Transitional Border at 100% coverage. Let dry.

Step 2:  Mix a dark tint strength of just Wet Concrete.

Roll it randomly over the surface using a damp sea sponge roller.

Step 3:  Knock this down slightly and immediately with a trowel held very flat and parallel to the surface.

Step 4:  Shimmerstone can also be tinted with Modern Masters Metallic Paints. Here the same Teal color is used for tinting that was used to basecoat the background. Roll this color on randomly and knock down slightly with your trowel.

Step 5:  An option that helps to pull the finish together is to mix some Nu-Antique Gold mica powder in to MM MasterClear (or another satin urethane topcoat) at a rate of approx. 1 teas. Mica to 1 C. MasterClear. Brush or roll it on and immediately pull over it tightly with a trowel using a hard pressure to leave the mica deposited mainly in the recessed areas of the finish.
